but the wall is made of concrete blocks, i know a lintel would have to go in , but how would he knock out the wall ?
any good building advice would be appreicatedI would like my husband to put a archway in my supporting wall ?
its not a case of supporting the ceilings as the guy here says a supporting wall supports the rafters to the roof if it is a Victorian house if it is a mo den house then it supports only the upper floors as they have trada trusses so have a survey done by a builder he will give quote and go for it properly as it is the most expensive thing you own and you might want to sell it one day and it will show up if it isn't done properlyI would like my husband to put a archway in my supporting wall ?
If your husband doesn't have any experience in this department, it really sounds like the sort of thing a licensed contractor should do. If things go wrong, damage to a supporting wall could result in serious structural damage to your house. Building temporary supports is a tricky business and if you're going to be messing around with a supporting wall, it's advisable to be really sure of what you're doing. Not really the kind of advice you're looking for, maybe, but...
You would have to support the ceilings on either side of the wall with ackro bars, and then take away enough of the wall to put in your RSJ, when the RSJ is sound take away the lower part of the wall.
You also by law have to get building regulation approval, showing plans of the structural alteration and making sure it complies. If you don't not only are you risking a fiasco, you may well have problems if you sell. Do it properly and professionally it will be cheaper in the end.
