When will my husband be eligible for Tricare benefits?

Are spouses eligible for medical once you start basic? Or do they have to wait until your first duty station? When will my husband be eligible for Tricare benefits?
When you start basic.

When you go to basic you take a copy of your marriage license and other papers with you and within the first few days everything is taken care of. He'll be enrolled in DEERS which is the system that keeps track of everybody eligible for military benefits and you'll be given the paperwork to mail to him to get an ID card at the closest military facility. It doesn't have to be the same service as you join. He gets an ID card and he can go to the base hospital for treatment if he's close to one or to a civilian doctor who accepts tricare.

The Dept. of Defense has a web site with all sorts of information for new military families.

Good luck.

When you have his information entered into DEERS he is automatically enrolled into Tricare Standard. With Standard there is a yearly deductible and co-pay for each visit. He would be seen at a Tricare approved civilian doctor, clinic or hospital. When he gets his ID card he can change it to Tricare Prime or Prime Remote. With this there is no deductible or co-pay. His medications can be filled on base or out in town with a small co-pay.
Im pretty sure it is at their first duty station, call tricare or go to their website and they will tell you exactly what you need to do, you may be able to start the paperwork now.

Yes they are eligible when you are at reception and get him enrolled in DEERS. He will get a packet in the mail explaining everything.

Make sure when you get to your duty station you enroll him in the EFMP (exceptional family members program).
Tricare Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS)
As soon as you are entered into DEERS (which he should do at basic), you will be eligible for medical.
